Ketamine is a medication that was approved by the FDA in 1970 for use as a general anesthetic. Compared to other anesthetics, it has minimal effects on the heart and respiratory system. Ketamine Therapy is the use of ketamine to treat psychiatric conditions. When used in this way, ketamine is given in doses much lower than when it is used as an anesthetic. During Ketamine Therapy, these low doses of ketamine are administered through an intravenous (IV) infusion, an intramuscular (IM) injection, or an intranasal spray. Substantial research suggests that Ketamine Therapy is a safe and effective to treat certain psychiatric conditions. Most of this research has involved adults with treatment resistant depression. Many of these individuals notice beneficial effects rapidly. These exciting results have led to more research on the use of ketamine in psychiatry. Some research suggests that Ketamine Therapy may also be helpful to people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These uses of ketamine are considered off-label, and ketamine is not approved by the FDA for treatment of depression or PTSD.
A recommended course of treatment generally consists of between 6 to 8 dosing sessions in total, at a frequency of 1 to 2 sessions per week, over a period of several weeks.
KAP is an enhancement to traditional psychotherapy. Ketamine administration has been shown to have antidepressant effects and tends to produce dissociative or psychedelic experiences, which may be leveraged through therapy to stimulate the process of growth and change. KAP can be done during your ketamine session, or within a day or two of treatment. KAP is strongly recommended alongside your ketamine treatments to allow you to discuss your experiences with the goals of integrating insights and identifying and reinforcing changes to ongoing negative patterns of thought and behavior. A course of treatment generally comprises one or more ketamine sessions followed by an integration therapy session.
